Why Are You Following?

Pastor Nate
In John 6:25, a crowd who had been searching for Jesus finally found Him and asked,
“Rabbi, when did You come here?”
It seemed like a harmless question, but Jesus did not answer it directly. Instead, He went straight to the heart of their motives:
“Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.”
They were following Him, but their motivation was misplaced. They were more interested in getting another free meal than in knowing the One who had given it.
Wrong Reasons to Follow
There are many good reasons to follow Christ, but there are also many selfish ones.
The crowd in John 6 had just witnessed Jesus feed over 5,000 people with one boy’s small lunch. That miracle should have pointed them to His identity as the Son of God. Instead, they were hoping for seconds.
If we are honest, we can be the same way. We can do the right things for the wrong reasons.
We can come to church expecting to be entertained or catered to rather than to worship and serve.
We can treat Jesus like someone who exists only to meet our needs and make life more comfortable.
We can cling to the label “Christian” simply so that family and friends will not worry about us, even if our hearts are far from Him.
Yes, Jesus cares about our needs. He created us, He knows us better than we know ourselves, and He delights to provide. But He wants more for us than temporary comfort.
That is why He said in verse 27:
“Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
Here is the big truth: Jesus wants you to have a full life, not just a full belly.
The Problem With Quick Fixes
Too often we rush through life grabbing whatever might “hold us over” spiritually.
We binge-watch shows because they give us a momentary escape from our problems.
We scroll endlessly on social media for a quick feeling of connection or distraction.
We throw ourselves into hobbies, sports, or games that keep us busy but never truly satisfied.
Even in the church, we can make the same mistake. We may run to the next event, look for the next emotional high, or chase the newest trend in Christian culture, hoping it will reignite our faith.
But these things fade quickly and leave us searching again.
Meanwhile, Jesus is offering something better. He is offering life, purpose, meaning, satisfaction, and true contentment. Yet we often trade His offer for what is cheap and easy.
We say, “Reading the Bible is hard,” or “I do not have the patience to pray.”
We tell ourselves, “Maybe when life slows down,” or “I am just too tired.”
An Invitation to Something Greater
Jesus is waiting for you to come to the end of yourself. He is calling you to a deeper, longer, more fulfilling relationship with Him. He is patient.
Following Jesus is not about chasing the next spiritual snack. It is about feasting daily on the Bread of Life.
Quick pleasures, even religious ones, cannot sustain you. Knowing Christ personally, loving Him deeply, and living for Him faithfully will fill your soul in ways nothing else ever can.
When you follow Him for the right reasons, you will discover that He truly satisfies every hunger of your heart.
