Fellowship with God

Who is the person that you go to first when you are excited about something that has happened, or when you are worried or afraid? Is it a best friend? A parent? A grandparent? For me, it would definitely be my best friend--my husband. Sometimes, I just can’t wait to see him so I can tell him about something exciting that has happened to me, even if it is a little thing. God definitely doesn’t look down on our earthly connections; rather, he wants us to find joy in our earthly relationships! But consider this: What if the first person you and I went to was the One that loves us more than anyone else? The One that sacrificed all for us? The One that created us? In John 17, shortly before he is arrested, Jesus is praying to His Heavenly Father. First about his current disciples, and then about the disciples who would come later…us! He prays in verses 20 and 23:

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word;
— John 17:20
I in them and Thou in Me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that Thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as Thou hast loved Me.
— John 17:23

Our Heavenly Father loves us and desires to have fellowship with us! God did not create us and then just leave us to be. He has always wanted a relationship with us from the very beginning. Genesis chapter 3 talks about how God walked in the Garden with Adam and Eve. When sin corrupted this beautiful relationship between the Creator and man, God made atonement for man by sending His Son to die on the cross for our sins.

Our fellowship with God can be restored if we accept this free gift of salvation. Aren’t you glad God didn’t give up on us when Adam and Eve sinned? Rather, as Paul reminds us in I Cor. 1:9, He calls us “unto the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” Our fellowship with God will never be perfect or complete until we are in Heaven, but what a beautiful thing it can be even here on earth! What a unique and awesome gift, that we can converse with our Creator and the Lord of all the earth! How awesome is it that He wants us to talk to him, and He wants us to share our burdens with Him!

Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.
— I Peter 5:7
Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation. Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.   My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
— Psalm 5:1-3
