Yes, You Need Help!

These were the inheritances which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel divided as an inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. So they made an end of dividing the country.
— Joshua 19:51

We are all guilty of it…thinking we are capable of handling everything on our own. However, can we handle everything on our own? We cannot but I find it amusing how many times we think it’s possible to do things on our own. The context of Joshua 19 is land division among the final 7 tribes. At the end of Joshua 19, we find the scope of those involved with dividing the land. It was not just Joshua.

As the leader of the people, did Joshua have the right to divide the land by himself? Did he have a position of power that allowed him to do all this by himself? I believe he did. We must learn that getting help is needed for the difficult circumstances of life. Joshua did not try to divide the land by himself but he got help from Eleazar the Priest and the heads of the tribes of Israel.

We all hold some type of leadership roles. The challenge to us is having the humility needed to accept help. We let our pride take priority instead of accepting advice and counsel from others. Maybe you are a leader on your sports team, are you listening to ideas of others on how the team can improve? Maybe you are a leader in your class, are you asking others how your class can grow closer to God? Maybe you are a leader in your home because one, or both, of your parents are absent or not spiritually minded. In either case, are you allowing others to help you?

I also find encouragement in Joshua 19:51 about the location of Joshua and the people. Look back at the verse, where are they? Where are the decisions being made? They are in the “door of the tabernacle”, or in our vocabulary today, the church. Are we getting our help from spiritual sources and are we putting ourselves in a spiritually challenging environment?
