What Happens If You Fail?

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
— Galatians 2:16

Have you ever had this question asked of you whether from a teacher, coach, or parent, “But what happens if you fail?” Our normal first reaction to this question is the quick response, “Failure’s not an option!” And just like that, we are exposed. Over the years, passionately playing to our strengths, working hard, and staying disciplined serves us well. However, what we are doing is quieting an inner voice that tells us, “You’re not enough!”

Those who ask us that question see through this and love us enough to push in. “You’re going to fail, and it’s okay. It does not define you. In fact, by working hard to be perfect, you are letting failure define you, and it will ultimately destroy you.”

The words that we need to move forward are, “There is no condemnation for those who are in Jesus. Your faith in Jesus is what makes you right and good.”

This life changing thought still finds us fighting to stay in a place of rest. Only in Jesus, I am complete, enough, and made right. I don’t need to prove it, work for it, or earn it. I am made right by faith in Jesus and through his work on the cross by paying for my sins.

Apply - Building strong habits and working hard does pay off. Your hard work, drive, and determination are a gift to produce success in your life, but don’t allow those things to define you. You aren’t enough on your own and never will be. Trust Jesus. It is ok to fail when trying your best. Do not let your failures define who you are. As a Christian, your identity is found in Jesus Christ.
