New “Red Flag” Laws

Pushing to Confiscate Guns By

Dr. Fred DeRuvo

It is tragic to note that since Donald J. Trump became our duly elected 45th president of the United States, we’ve continued to see situations in which people armed with guns have opened fire on innocent bystanders. Nearly all of these perpetrators have been aligned with political left. Many are known as “Trump resisters,” believing that President Trump and his supporters are trying to destroy America. The latest shooting occurred just recently (August 26th) in Jacksonville, FL at a large video gaming event. An individual who illegally carried a gun into the “gun-free zone” event (after legally purchasing it in his home state in the Northeast, but illegally carrying it across state lines into Florida), and opened fire on other gamers was not stopped at the door because there was no security present to enforce the no guns allowed policy at the event itself. The problem as we know is that neither criminals or mentally unstable obey “gun free zone” policies. Our hearts and prayers go out to victims. Not long after President Trump initially took office, Florida experienced another shooting at a high school in Parkland. Several were killed and wounded. Schools are generally also gun-free zones (stemming from a bill pushed into law by Joe Biden). Shortly after that event, to the dismay of many conservatives, President Trump appeared to indicate that he was in favor of removing guns without due process from people who might become a danger to themselves or others. Since that time, at least 13 states have passed Red Flag gun laws, also called Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) or Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVROs). These laws allow officials and even family members to call on local judges to order the removal of guns from an individual if it is believed he/she might harm him/herself or others. This law, while appearing to be “good” on its face, has terrible ramifications for society in practice because it assumes guilt without proof. While 13 states now have these laws, three additional states are in the process of trying to pass Red Flag laws. Georgia does not have anything even in process…yet. This could certainly change if an anti-gun politician is elected to become Georgia’s next governor and/or the State House manages to vote in more anti-gun politicians than not. It is something we need to keep our eyes on and be concerned about if we value the 2nd Amendment. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that every totalitarian regime in history has chosen to do what they can to eliminate guns. Once this is accomplished, that society suffers miserably, often with millions being murdered. Their defense is removed from them making them victims of state regimes. The saving grace for America is the Second Amendment and even though the text itself declares it shall not be infringed, politicians opposed to this amendment have repeatedly chipped away at it, often by putting laws in front of the amendment without actually touching the amendment itself. For instance, in California, they have succeeded in making it illegal to purchase ammunition online. Further, they continue to push anti-gun laws that deal with ammunition itself, not guns. They want to limit the amount of ammo a person can purchase each month. Fingerprints must be recorded for each purchase and a 30 day waiting period is in the offing. So without actually doing damage to the 2A directly, lawmakers are trying to do an end run around the Second Amendment by focusing on the availability of ammunition, not guns themselves. We will likely continue to see attacks on the Second Amendment as well as the First. What can you do? Certainly you can and should vote for people who support the amendments found within the Constitution. Don’t stay home. Vote. Deception in the Church? Recently, my latest book was published called, Deception in the Church, published by Christian Publishing House. The book highlights the very real fact that there are many wolves that have entered the Christian arena. These individuals are like the politicians who speak out of both sides of their mouth. They say essentially what people want to hear, much like the false prophets we read about in many books of the Old Testament (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Zechariah, etc.), and are warned about by Jesus, Paul, Peter and others in the New Testament. Christians need to be aware of what is happening within Christendom today and we certainly need to be aware of how false prophets work to deceive people. You can expect this to be an ongoing topic of discussion here in these pages in coming months. It’s not going to go away and it is worsening at unprecedented rates. One of the biggest problems facing the Church today is known as NAR or New Apostolic Reformation. Individuals who make up this movement teach that there are living “apostles” and true “prophets” among us today, to the tune of roughly 500 “apostles.” As one can imagine, if these are true apostles, then they would have the exact same authority as the original twelve apostles. That means that when they teach, they are teaching what they believe is the “mind of Christ,” and should be accepted as coming from Jesus. The same applies for today’s so-called “prophets.” These individuals are constantly providing what they say are “words of knowledge” from the Lord. People who attend the congregations of these individuals are taught that they are not to question either the apostles or prophets. To do so is to question God Himself, they argue. That’s not what Paul says in his letter to Timothy. “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron…” (1 Timothy 4:1-2 KJV). These individuals attempt to present themselves as demi-gods, who have a direct line to God’s mind. If this smacks of narcissism to oppress the flock, you’d be correct. That is exactly what it is, yet when watching their many videos on the ‘Net, you’ll see congregants willingly submitting to whatever “word” they hear spoken. Critical thinking is absent. Why? Too many Christians do not read their own Bibles. They want someone to teach them what the Bible says instead of reading the Bible for themselves. Certainly, it’s fine and necessary to sit under the teaching of a qualified pastor. It’s part of what we call worship and every Christian should avail themselves of truly biblical teaching. The problem comes into play though when Christians set their brains on hold, simply going along with anything and everything they hear because it sides with their “emotional” response. This is not good. In fact, Paul and others tell us that we need to be responsible for what we believe, that we should search the Scriptures to determine what God is actually saying, not what we like to think or “feel” He is saying. That oneness is on us and we need to approach His Word with a bit of fear and trembling seeking only to understand God’s actual message to us. There really is no excuse for Christians to not read and know His Word. Ignoring the Bible is done to our peril. Reading His Word daily is our spiritual food, just like eating meals daily is our physical food. We cannot survive long without one or the other. Reading the Bible is how we arm ourselves against error. Censorship of Christians & Conservatives on Social Media Censorship is when people use fear, power, or intimidation to shut down voices of those with whom they disagree. Because the main social networks are owned and controlled by people who are essentially far Left of center politically and ideologically, they are in the position of doing what they can to shut down conservative and Christian voices. If you’re on one of the social networks and all you do is check in occasionally, post pictures of places you’ve been with friends and/or family members, chances are good that those who control these social networks will leave you alone. They won’t care about you. What they will care about is if you are a Christian and/or conservative voice theologically and/or politically on “their” social network. If the latter describes you, count on the fact that you will be shadow banned (a term that refers to your posts being essentially made invisible to others, via specific algorithms), suspended or outright terminated from that social network. Companies like Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and even Amazon and others take pains to silence the voices of Christians and conservatives. This is done in a variety of ways beyond what’s already been mentioned. In the case of Amazon for instance, if you publish a conservative Christian book, they won’t even let you advertise it on Amazon. They make no apologies about that. It is outright censorship that does not bother them and unless and until Congress does something, it will continue. If you try to advertise your Christian book on Twitter, it will likely only be seen by atheists who aren’t interested, again through algorithms. Of course, these giant tech companies are really pushing this censorship of certain groups because of the upcoming midterms. It is one of the best ways to keep conservatives/Christians from working with others to ensure that word gets out regarding who to vote for in November. Even though the First Amendment (1A) guarantees everyone the ability to freely speak their minds, those opposed to true free speech argue that it only applies to the government. Beyond this, anything that smacks of “hate speech” they believe should be censored. The problem is twofold. First, the 1A makes no distinction between regular speech and “hate” speech, arguing that only non-hate speech is allowed. Second, and conveniently enough, the very people who are actively censoring conservatives and Christians are the ones determining what constitutes “hate speech.” What these people like to do is label anyone who supports President Trump as a racist, a bigot, a misogynist, xenophobe or something else entirely. If a person is labeled one or more of these things, they are by virtue of that fact, also labeled a “hater,” meaning they are filled with hate that comes out in their words and actions. Ergo, people like this should be shut down for the sake of creating and maintain a civil society. It is a form of totalitarianism that is taking hold because of political correctness (aka Cultural Marxism). However, what is fascinating is how much it is the Left who hates. AntiFa, Black Lives Matter and other militant groups we see in society are more often than not, from the Left side of the political aisle. They seek to establish their policies through fear, force, and intimidation just like the Brown Shirts of Hitler’s regime. The best thing to do? Ignore them. Give them a wide birth. Don’t allow yourself to be caught up in their illegal anarchist activities. If Christians and conservatives don’t play the Left’s game, it will turn to nothing and the only ones these Leftwing ideologues will end up fighting or harassing are law enforcement officials. Who will win that match? Folks, we live in dangerous times when many forces on the Left have declared war on the Constitution and the biblical values that we love. As Jesus Himself said, “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves,” (Matthew 10:16 KJV). We have an obligation to God and a responsibility to live the right way, the way that glorifies Him (1 Timothy 6:1-5). In a world that is constantly challenging the truth of Scripture as well as the existence of God Himself, the things that are happening in society should not throw us off balance. Paul warned us centuries ago what society would be like as we approached the end of the age. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away,” (2 Timothy 3:1-5 KJV).
